Dr Edward Cheong BSc (Hons), BMedSci, MB, BCh, BAO (NUI), MD (UK), FRCS (Eng) is a Senior Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon with PANASIA SURGERY, SINGAPORE, specialising in Laparoscopic Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery, and Therapeutic Endoscopy. He graduated from University College Cork, Ireland in 1996, and did his surgical training in UK. In 2006, he attained his MD for research into COX-2 in Barrett’s esophageal cancer. In 2007, He attained his FRCS(Eng). In 2008, Dr Cheong completed his specialist surgical training at The Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) in UK. In 2008-2009, he completed a 1-year prestigious post-CCT surgical fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, USA with the world-renowned minimally invasive esophageal surgery pioneer, Professor James D. Luketich. He was the Upper GI Cancer chair, Consultant in Upper GI and General Surgery at the NNUH from 2010 – 2022, where he introduced minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE), prehabilitation & enhanced recovery after surgery, paravertebral catheter analgesia for esophagectomy, and endoscopic treatments for early oesophageal and gastric cancers. Under his leadership, NNUH was recognised for patients having the shortest length of hospital stay after esophagectomy/ gastrectomy (median 7 days) in UK (National Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer Audit, NOGCA, UK) and in Europe for the next 12 consecutive years. This is an excellent surrogate marker of low post-operative complications - an important factor in the long-term survival after cancer surgery! In 2017, he was the recipient of the Inaugural Professor James D. Luketich Chairman’s International Award for the best outcome in MIE – the first surgeon to receive the prestigious award outside North America. In 2018, Dr Cheong received the National Award in UK by the Care Quality Commission as part of the NHS 70th-year celebrations (Driving Improvements - Top Doctors who have made a difference to the NHS).
